A show without words but with a big and generous heart, One by One is the beautiful story of Bonnie and Marty as they meet and fall in love.
An enchanting silent theatre show with a live band, One by One harks back to the age of silent film, with Bonnie and Marty’s story played out in a magical, musical world where
physical expression matters most and a conspiratorial grin speaks a thousand words.
Created and premiered in 2011 LAB theatre have since developed the show further with the support of the STAMP
development programme at THE EDGE and are very excited to bring One by One, back to Auckland.
“It has been a wonderful experience developing the show over the last year, and we are very excited to introduce a new
member of LAB theatre company, Cole Jenkin, who takes on the role of Marty in this upcoming season” says Director and LAB Theatre co-founder Pedro Ilgenfritz. “So even if you saw the original production, this new season will be a completely new experience”.
One by One fuses the musicianship of Jews Brothers Band musicians John Ellis and Nigel Gavin and the playful inventiveness of
physical theatre and clowning performed by Katie Burson and Cole Jenkin to create a heart-warming night at the theatre.
One by One’s large-as-life soundscape played live during the show is based on Yo no se que me han hecho tus ojos, a delightfully haunting tango by Uruguayan composer Francisco Canaro which takes us through the ups and downs, the
misunderstandings and joy of a new relationship and the possibilities of love. Flirtatious keyboard, cheeky guitar and
seductive wind instrumentation become delightful accomplices to Bonnie’s and Marty’s exploits.
Using music to help create the ebb and flow of Bonnie and Marty’s journey instead of a script means each member of the
audience can create their own world for the characters and that the show not only spans generations but also language
barriers.
“We wanted everyone to be able to enjoy this show, it’s a universal story” says Katie Burson, Co-Founder of LAB theatre and performer, “So much can be expressed through a look or touch and it’s wonderful to be able to share that with people from all walks
of life and know they will still understand the story and laugh and cry along with us”.

touch, the slyest grin and the broadest gesture will warm the cockles of your heart.
One by One will be performed at The Herald theatre from Tuesday 26 February - Saturday 2 March, 7.00pm as part of Auckland Fringe
