Art Beat’s Final Weekend In Re:Start
Art Beat’s Final Weekend In Re:Start – Three Days Of Music, Performance And Exhibitions
Three days of local interactive art and music will be filling the spaces of Re:START this Friday 22nd February through to Sunday 24th February as part of Art Beat’s final weekend. The three day event includes a free concert to celebrate the launch of the album Songs for Christchurch, a kissing booth (with germ free kisses), a performance by Paul Ubana Jones, the opportunity to swap your fears for a hand printed poster and receive your very own gift from artist Gaby Montejo.
Songs for Christchurch, a compilation album featuring local and international artists is being launched on Sunday 24th February with a celebratory free concert featuring artists from Electric Wire Hustle Sound System, the Nudge, Jessie James and the Outlaws, AHoriBuzz and Delaney Davidson.
The album is fundraising for community projects involved in the rebuild of Christchurch city. The album features twenty two local and global artists including Grammy award winners Imogen Heap and Flight of the Concords. All proceeds from the album go to community projects for rebuilding Christchurch.
The art component of the Art Beat weekend involves Christchurch-based artists creating a series of socially engaging projects within the public spaces of Re:START. Also on show is graffiti art by Wongi ‘FREAK’ Wilson and Nick ‘Ikarus’ Tam and the Place in Time photographic exhibition, which takes a light hearted look at the way Cantabrians enjoy the summer months in Christchurch.
The Art Beat initiative is a collaborative business / arts venture between Re:START and Arts Voice Christchurch which provide performance opportunities, exposure and work experience for established and developing Christchurch-based artists from November 2012 through to February 2013.
Arts Voice Christchurch is an independent art advocacy group set up to make sure the arts become an essential part of the new city.
Art Beat Project Facilitator Deborah McCormick, says “this three day Art Beat event is an exciting and appropriate way to cap off the four month long programme of local art and music in Re:START. Art Beat has demonstrated that art is a vital part of the inner city during its rebuild, and we intend for Art Beat to evolve to provide further opportunities for artists to play their unique part in the city’s recovery.”
