60-piece RNZAF Band to perform military classics at the Air Force Museum, Wigram
The Royal New Zealand Air Force Band will be in full swing at the Air Force Museum, Wigram, at 7pm on Saturday 23rd
February.
The RNZAF Band is delighted to return to the Air Force Museum after performing to rapturous applause there last Easter
during the band's 75th anniversary celebrations. Being seated near the vintage planes is a thrill for the musicians and
audience alike.
Squadron Leader Graham Hanify, MBE, will conduct the band's upcoming performance. Hanify, who plays baritone saxophone
for acclaimed quartet Saxcess, says the programme will explore the power and more subtle qualities of a large symphonic
band. He previously conducted the RNZAF Band for 25 years.
“Everybody who likes fine brass playing will be looking forward to it,” Squadron Leader Hanify said.
“We’re working hard to perform as a very tight ensemble on this tour which takes dedication and hard work during the
rehearsal stages.”
Popular classics to be featured are Leonard Bernstein's Candide Overture, Tchaikovsky's Capriccio Italien and John
Philip Sousa's King Cotton March. Memorable performances are anticipated of Chaminade's Concertino for flute, to be
played by Rebecca Steel (former flute with the Philharmonia in London), Weber's Concertino for Clarinet (with David
McGregor, principal clarinet of the National Youth Orchestra), and Ballad for Saxophone in E flat (with Reuben Chin).
“We’ve given our outstanding musicians solos to play and believe they’ll be a treat for the audience. I hope the
trombone section may steal the show with their performance of Tricky Trombones,” Hanify said.
