Mac Miller Live at the Powerstation
Mac Miller Live at the Powerstation
Date Change
– Was Sun 17 Feb – Now Sat 16 Feb
It makes
sense. Music as much fun as Miller’s was made for Saturday
nights. The Jewish hip-hop phenom has risen alongside fellow
Pennsylvanian Wiz Khalifa to put his city on the rap map.
His sing-song, melodic style strongly evokes the humour and
wordplay of the Daisy Age, when artists like De La Soul and
A Tribe Called Quest ruled the scene.
It’s perhaps a
strange notion, as Miller is just 21 years old, and was born
when those artists were at their peak. But his love for the
era is deep and abiding – he titled a mixtape hosted by DJ
Jazzy Jeff ‘92 til Infinity’ in reference to West Coast
greats Souls of Mischief, and has linked up with other 90s
icons like Bun B and Talib Kweli.
This isn’t just a
history show, though. Miller is a talented
multi-instrumentalist, and collaborates with cutting edge
producers like 9th Wonder and Clams Casino to create a full,
snapping modern sound. His debut album Blue Slide Park
produced the hits ‘Frick Park Market’ and ‘Smile
Back’, each with well over 20,000,000 views on YouTube.
They helped propel the album to number one on the Billboard
charts – stunningly, it was the first time an
independently distributed debut had achieved the feat since
1995.
Critics also noted his bravery in one area in
particular. The album eschewed the modern obsession with
guest appearances, and featured Miller rapping alone for its
length. That sense of iconoclasm, of being willing to buck
trends (or make his own), is a large part of his appeal –
one that has seen him compared to fellow modern hip hop
mavericks like Odd Future or A$AP Rocky.
Miller was
just named Complex magazine’s ‘Man of Next Year’ for
2012, and is on the verge of releasing a star-studded follow
up to Blue Slide Park entitled Watching Movies With the
Sound Off. It is, therefore, a perfect time to catch this
rising rap phenom’s acclaimed live show while his star is
in the ascendant.
And, thanks to his schedule change,
you can now do it on the best night of the week.
Mac
Miller’s first ever Auckland show is on Saturday Feb 16th,
