Last chance to hear Kelle’s Choice on Matinee Idle
Matinee Idle fans will get their last chance to hear production assistant Kelle Howson present her popular daily song
selection, Kelle’s Choice, on Waitangi Day before she heads to the Solomon Islands to spend 10 months as a VSA UniVol.
Kelle will be working as a communications assistant with the Nature Conservancy in Honiara. The Nature Conservancy is an
American-based organisation that supports Solomon Islands communities to protect their natural resources and preserve
rare species such as the endangered Hawksbill turtle.
Matinee Idle plays on National Radio on weekday afternoons during January, and on public holidays during the year. It
features an idiosyncratic selection of music chosen by hosts Simon Morris and Phil O’Brien, as well as the daily Kelle’s
Choice, a song chosen by production assistant Kelle Howson.
Kelle first started working for Matinee Idle while she was at secondary school. Since then she has built up quite a
following.
“She gets more mail than Phil and I do – she even gets proposals of marriage,” says Simon Morris. “She’s like the third
leg of the stool, she keeps us on the straight and narrow.”
Kelle is one of 11 VSA (Volunteer Service Abroad) UniVols setting off on 10-month assignments in the Pacific over the
next few weeks.
The VSA Univol programme is a collaboration between VSA and Otago University’s Geography Department and Victoria
University’s Development Studies Department. To apply, UniVols must be studying at least 300-level papers in development
studies.
This year’s UniVols are going to the Solomon Islands, Bougainville, PNG, Vanuatu, Tonga and Samoa.
