Saturday 02 February 2013 12:00 – Tamati Cairns

Maori rights to freshwater still remains in the news headlines, with the NZ Maori Council seeking a favourable ruling from the Supreme Court. This week Ngawai Herewini talks with Tamati Cairns, spokesman and Chair of the Pouakani Trust, part of the group of Waikato iwi who have joined with the New Zealand Maori Council to challenge the privatization of Mighty River Power and to argue that the Government should not sell shares in the power generators until it has shown how it has the capacity to settle any successful Maori claims to water.

Tamati Cairns says given the complexity of the case, it is unlikely there will be any decision before Pouakani is back in court later this month to argue for ownership of a section of the Waikato River near Mangakino where Mighty Rover Power has three hydro dams.

He says the Crown seems to have adopted bullying tactics, emphasizing the right of Parliament to make laws while ignoring the duty of ministers to act in accordance with the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Sunday 03 February 2013 12:00 – Henare Kingi and Willie Jackson
