Gallery’s Bulletin Magazine Now Free to iPad Users
A new and exciting platform for Christchurch Art Gallery’s highly respected Bulletin magazine is now available for free to iPad users for the first time.

Gallery director Jenny Harper says the technology allows the Gallery to offer a rich and dynamic magazine in an extraordinary format for artworks. The magazine is available for free download and subscription through the Newsstand application.

Bulletin is already one of the best art gallery magazines you will come across internationally. It has been something of a regular in design and publishing awards. The iPad application gives us the chance to offer more content, including video and sound works, and we're allowing people to subscribe to it for free. As far as we are aware the standard to which we are producing this is a first in Australasia.”

She said that while the Gallery had been considering digital options for some time the post-quake environment had added impetus to the project as staff pursued innovative ways of creating a ‘Gallery without walls’.

“We still firmly believe that print is the best place to reproduce artworks, and Bulletin will continue to be produced in that format. However, in addition to this we’re very keen to explore the options for content that the iPad offers. I’m sure this will be welcomed by our strong local readers but this development gives us an additional opportunity to reach an international audience.”

The application has been developed by Strategy Advertising and Design, using Magplus software. It contains the same content as the print version of the magazine, but with added extras such as video artworks and a greater range of images.

Curatorial, Collections and Public Programme Manager Blair Jackson said the iPad application was an excellent way to expand the Gallery’s reach beyond its existing subscribers.

“With the continuing expansion of mobile technology and the tablet market, it's a great time for us to get into the field – and it looks amazing.”
