Happyzine celebrates its fifth year of feel good media
Charlotte Squire, founder and Editor of the positive news website Happyzine is celebrating five years of optimistic Kiwi
media.
Happyzine is a New Zealand based good news website that Ms Squire says is designed to “inspire positive community and
environmental change via stories of what's possible”.
Ms Squire, who also works as a “normal journalist” says she started Happyzine after she'd given birth to her first child
and found herself with time on her hands.
“I was spending long, quiet days bonding with my newborn and this idea for a platform for positive news stories kept
niggling at me,” she said.
Squire said she'd been seeking markets for her “inspiring environmental change stories” as a freelance writer for years
and she was tired of trying so hard. So she set up her own market.
“It wasn't quite as easy as I first hoped, but over the years our following has grown and these days thousands of people
tune into Happyzine for good news about community based change and green design and opinion based blogs.
“People pay what they can afford to sign up for weekly ezines, so we keep it financially sustainable for everyone. And
when they sign up they go in weekly draws to win free stuff from green businesses around New Zealand so it's a win, win,
win really.”
This year Ms Squire says the focus will be on “the voice of youth”, as well as positive Maori news, green stories and
inspiring news “straight out of our neighbourhoods”.
