Soriano Takes Aim at Filly Series Leader
Race 7 of New Zealand Bloodstock’s 10-race Filly of the Year Series – the $70,000 Group 3 Tiger Prawn Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) – at Trentham on Saturday is set to provide 14 fillies with a golden opportunity to earn some valuable Series points with the current leaders not contesting the race.
With Series leaders Fix (Iffraaj) and Rollout the Carpet (Holy Roman Emperor) not lining up, the Graeme and Debbie Rogerson trained Soriano (Savabeel) heads the field holding third place in the Series with 12 points. Soriano won the fourth leg of the Series – the Group 3 Eulogy Stakes in December – and a win on Saturday would take her to within 1.5 points of current leader Fix.
Trainer Kevin Gray will have two runners in Lovetessa and High Fashion, both by O’Reilly. Lovetessa was third at her last start in the Group 3 Eulogy Stakes with High Fashion coming into the race after winning her last start.
In-form sire Darci Brahma will be represented by three runners Outshine, Aurora Lights and Lucky Country. The Oaks Stud-owned Outshine will be looking to become the second Group winner for her sire and The Oaks Stud inside a week after Recite won the Group 2 Little Avondale Stud Wakefield Challenge Stakes last weekend.
Sire Handsome Ransom has two runners in the Group 3 event with last start winner Jimato from the John Sargent stable and Cupcake who has been placed in three of her four race day appearances.
Marmi (Lion Heart), Dragon Beauty (Keeninsky) and Omana (Bernardini) all come into the race off the back of last start wins where they cleared maiden ranks in good fashion.
The Lisa Latta trained If I Can I Can (Iffraaj) comes into the race after running fourth at Awapuni, while Jenna Mahoney’s Kalevala (Falkirk) will take her place after finishing third at Ellerslie behind Abidewithme earlier this month.
Catalma (Old Deuteronomy) completes the field and comes into the race after a recent trial at Te Awamutu.
The winner of Saturday’s Group 3 will earn 6 Series points with second earning 3 points and third 1.5 points. To view the current points table for the Filly of the Year Series, click here.
