$1 Million Karaka Million Field Finalised
The fields for the $1 million Karaka Million (Res.L) – New Zealand’s richest race – and the $100,000 NZB Insurance Karaka 3YO Mile (Res.L) have been finalised with the fields now available to be viewed online.
The barrier draws for the two races were announced live on Radio Trackside earlier today with the stakes winning filly and likely Karaka Million favourite Ruud Awakening (Bernardini) faring well drawing barrier seven.
Ruud Awakening is the likely Karaka Million favourite
Last start Group 3 Eclipse Stakes winner Gobi Ranger (Tale of the Cat) has drawn wide in the million dollar race in barrier 14 while other stakes winners Catalonia (Commands) and Dancer’s Tale (Tale of the Cat) have drawn barriers six and 12 respectively.
Sadly the only Australian entry – the Anthony Freedman trained Minaj (Commands) – has been withdrawn from the race after developing an elevated temperature overnight.
Some interesting facts on the 2013 Karaka Million field:
• This year’s field comprises 5 horses from the Karaka Premier Sale, 8 from the Select Sale and 2 from the Festival Sale.
• Tale of the Cat will be represented by two runners - Gobi Ranger and Dancer’s Tale.
• Westbury Stud’s Karaka 2012 draft has produced three Karaka Million runners - Charlestown, Ruud Awakening and Princess Sophia.
• Albert Bosma’s Go Racing Syndications will have two runners with Ruud Awakening and Charlestown both making the field.
• Trainer Lisa Latta will have two runners - Charlestown and Keepherhot. Latta won the race in 2011 with Fort Lincoln.
• Sunday will see the sixth running of the Karaka Million. The race has previously been won by Vincent Mangano (2008), The Heckler (2009), Sister Havana (2010), Fort Lincoln (2011) and Ockham’s Razor last year.

The $100,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Karaka 3YO Mile will also be held on Sunday night at 6.13pm and has drawn a strong field headed by last season’s Group 1 Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes winner Choice Bro (Choisir).
Established in 2010, the race is open to horses nominated for last year’s Karaka Million and has been won by some high profile three-year-olds including Group 1 winners Banchee in 2011 and Rock ‘N’ Pop last year. The Order of Entry is based on NZ domestic ratings.
