Venue Announced for Capital E National Theatre for
Children's 2013 Productions
With the world premiere of a unique and exciting collaboration and the return of two of their most requested shows to date, Capital E National Theatre for Children proudly announces its 2013 line-up for young audiences.
This year will mark a new chapter in Capital E National Theatre for Children’s history as they present their school holiday seasons at Downstage Theatre. The company’s Creative Producer Stephen Blackburn explains, “We’ve premiered productions for 8-14 year olds at Downstage over the past few years and now presenting the younger-focused works there in the holidays as well is an exciting extension to our relationship.” Downstage's Director/CEO Hilary Beaton says, “We’re delighted to welcome the company into Downstage this year. Responding to the needs of artists and companies, and providing solutions that deliver quality work to all audiences are fundamentals of our Presenting Partnership model. We have a strong alignment with Capital E and it’s a partnership we’re very happy to be strengthening."
Seasons, the theatre’s most frequently requested work for 2–7 year olds, will be the first work presented at Downstage in the April holidays before touring nationally until November. This highly energetic, captivating show will transport children through song, dance and puppetry into the heart of our ever-changing seasonal calendar. The audience will journey into nature's world of living creatures, colours and sounds. From icy lands where the earth is sleeping to lively days where the birds are courting and caterpillars are transforming, this is theatre at its magical best.
The July holidays will bring a return season of the 2012 hit IVY by Jennifer Martin. The show will also tour to regional festivals nationally throughout the year. A clash with Cleopatra, schmoozing with Shakespeare, and even a detour to the moon – this quirky queen of clean lets nothing distract her from her mission to save the dinosaurs from certain extinction. With a cinematic score, IVY will warm the hearts and spark the imaginations of children of all ages.
Leading the 2013 programme in March, the company will join with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra to transform a mythical tale into a legendary performance in a new collaborative work created specifically for young people. Sky Dancer will premiere at the Capital E National Arts Festival in Wellington Town Hall in March before touring to Hamilton, Auckland and Christchurch. Taking inspiration from celebrated author Witi Ihimaera’s novel of the same name, world-renowned composer Gareth Farr has created a magnificent symphonic work for young ears. Accompanied by large-scale projections, stunning puppetry and unassuming heroine Skylark, acclaimed conductor Grant Cooper will wield the baton and control the magic for this unrepeatable introduction to classical music.
