The Chills to play Dunedin Botanic Garden 150th

The Chills to play Dunedin Botanic Garden 150th

Dunedin, 4 January 2013 – Iconic Dunedin band The Chills will take the stage later this month to celebrate the launch of the 150th anniversary celebrations of another of the city’s great icons, the Dunedin Botanic Garden.

The Sunday 27 January gig will mark the beginning of a year of celebrations, including exhibitions, entertainment and educational events, as well as hosting the 2013 Global Botanic Gardens Congress in October, with international delegates from around the world.

DCC Communications and Marketing Manager Graham McKerracher says having The Chills play is a perfect way to get such a milestone year rolling.

The Chills was one of the bands that really helped put the ‘Dunedin sound’ on the international music map. They are a familiar part of the city’s musical landscape and I’m sure a lot of people from Dunedin - and further afield - will seize the opportunity to hear them live in such a beautiful setting.”

As always, The Chills will feature front man Martin Phillipps, who has been the driving force behind the band since it formed back in 1980.

Renowned for songs such as Pink Frost, I Love My Leather Jacket and Heavenly Pop Hit, the band toured widely at home and overseas in the 1980s and 1990s, and recorded albums in both the UK and USA.

Phillipps will be joined James Dickson (bass) and Todd Knudson (drums), who have been playing alongside him for more than 12 years now, as well as Erica Stichbury (keyboards/guitar/violin) and Oli Wilson (keyboards), who have been working with him for seven and four years respectively.

The Mayor will launch the 150th anniversary celebrations in the lower Garden at 1pm on Sunday 27 January and The Chills will appear on stage shortly after.
