Canon New Zealand is pleased to announce entries are now open for New Zealand’s premier awards recognising media excellence, the Canon Media Awards 2013.

Heading into its third consecutive year, Yusuke Mizoguchi, Managing Director of Canon New Zealand says he is looking forward to 2013 being the most competitive awards yet. “Given the high calibre of our media and outstanding quality of work submitted last year - the bar is continually being raised.”

Over the past two years that Canon has been naming rights sponsor, the Canon Media Awards has attracted record numbers of entries. The increase in submissions represents the most competitive pool of talent since the awards inception.

The Canon Media Awards includes newspapers, magazines, websites, blogs and photography with special categories awarding reporters, cartoonists and other professionals. Next year will see two additional awards in the photographic category - Best Feature Photo and Best Portrait – as well as an award for Lifestyle feature in magazines.

Two changes to judging of the photographic section will take place in 2013. Firstly, the introduction of another acclaimed judge, Mark Baker, whose unique eye for imagery has taken him around the world working for the likes of Sony Music and BBC as a professional photographer. Secondly, all works will be judged anonymously to continue to build upon the integrity of the Awards.

“The Canon Media Awards is a fantastic opportunity to showcase New Zealand’s media talent.”

“Canon is delighted to sponsor this event and celebrate all the great efforts of the New Zealand print and online media,” says Mizoguchi.

Highly coveted awards such as Canon Newspaper of the Year, Best Website, Press Photographer of the Year and Reporter of the Year continue to recognise many of the industries great names as well as provide an opportunity to unearth some of New Zealand’s up-and-coming talent throughout the industry.

Canon has been involved with the annual Newspaper Publishers’ Association (NPA) awards since 2006, formerly known as the Qantas Media Awards and took over the primary naming sponsorship in 2011.
