Flicks.co.nz Critics Judge ‘Looper’ 2012’s Best Film
Film website Flicks.co.nz has announced the results of their annual critics’ poll with Rian Johnson’s superior science-fiction tale Looper taking out the top spot. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis as younger and older versions of the same
hitman in a future grappling with time travel, Looper had the same impact on Flicks writers as it did on the wider public, proving accessible and enjoyable to a wide range
of moviegoers without sacrificing smarts or Johnson’s creative vision.
Flicks Editor Steve Newall said of the top-ranked film: “Refusing to get bogged down in the complexities of time travel, Looper found a broad audience with a smart mix of sci-fi and action, taking them on a thrilling ride that included a deft late
switch from big ideas to intimate focus. Judged film of the year by our critics, Looper appeared on more of their best-of lists than any other - and we don't always see eye-to-eye.”
Behind Looper, clear winner of the 2012 poll, were Wes Anderson’s tale of runaway lovebirds Moonrise Kingdom; Ben Affleck’s outlandish true story of a CIA rescue mission from 1970s Iran in Argo; Joss Whedon’s blockbuster Marvel team-up The Avengers; with Gareth Evans’ Indonesian action tour de force The Raid rounding out the top five.
The full list of 20 critics’ picks can be found online here.
The site’s writers were asked to submit ranked lists of up to twenty of their favourite films of 2012, restricted only
to those that have played to the public during the year and aren’t, to the best of knowledge, getting a wider release in
2013.
The Flicks writers who contributed to the poll included Dominic Corry, James Croot, Adam Fresco, Matt Glasby, Andrew
Hedley, Rebecca Barry Hill, Rose Matafeo, Jill McNab, Frances Morton, Rajneel Singh, Tony Stamp and Aaron Yap. Flicks
editorial staff Liam Maguren, Steve Newall and Paul Scantlebury also submitted their picks of 2012.
