One Night Only: Live Music, Art Performances, Night Market And Smoothies in Re:START
This Friday night watch a girl with flaming candle antlers watch you from a shop window, share a smoothie made from a pedal-powered smoothie maker and listen to live music by Harbour Union musicians, MC Tali and a Johnny Cash tribute band in Re:START, Cashel Mall.
Bringing local crafters, musicians, artists and street performers into the city centre for one night only, this Art Beat event on Friday 14th December from 7.00pm – 10.00pm also includes a hearty banquet of soup for 100 people, art performances and a candle lit night market to entertain the people of Christchurch two weeks before Christmas.
The art performances and activities are part of The Social, a collective of artists presenting a series of socially engaging art projects within the public spaces of Re:START. Co-founder of The Social, Lucy Matthews says: “The Social is made up of 24 local artists asked to create engaging work for public spaces in Re:START. The public has been surprised by the inviting nature of the works and have responded with curious questions. Friday night’s performances and activities are just a snapshot of what Art Beat has already showcased, proposing a different way of seeing and experiencing art in our transitional city”.
In celebration of this event, the Re:START retailers and food stalls will be open until 9.00pm.
The event is part of the Art Beat initiative, a four month long multi-arts programme in Re:START running until the end of February 2013. Art Beat is a collaborative business / arts venture between Re:START and Arts Voice Christchurch which is providing performance opportunities, exposure and work experience for established and developing Christchurch-based artists.
Arts Voice Christchurch Project Facilitator Deborah McCormick says “The Art Beat programme was developed to create opportunities for local and emerging artists, and we have been overwhelmed by the high level of creative and critical response by Christchurch artists. A Night in Re:START will be a wonderful opportunity to view and showcase many artists’ work for one night only.”
THE SOCIAL PROGRAMME:
Share a Smoothie
A
pedal-powered smoothie maker will be making smoothies from
local and Fair Trade ingredients (thanks to the awesome
people at C1 Café and All Good Bananas).
Smoothies will
be free and served in personalised glasses.
The Social Soup
The Social Soup project, 8.00pm – 9.30pm on Friday 14th December prepared by renowned chef Gary Miller, will be serving creamy leak and potato soup with bread to around 100 people from 8.00pm on the night. Breaking bread, sharing a meal and conversation will provide an alternative way of interacting with fellow citizens to the window shopping or purchasing of items that is the typical function in Re:START.
Traditionally served as an entrée, soup represents the beginning of something, reflecting the early stages of Christchurch’s rebuild. Soup is also a dish renowned for its healing properties and communal partaking. To secure your place please RSVP to socialsoupchch@gmail.com and don’t forget your spoon.
The Night Market
A magical evening bringing together art wares, locally crafted quirky gifts, boutique vintage clothing, treats and treasures for all!
Make Doubt Your Friend
The Creamed Corn Collective will collect your anonymous fears and swap them for a hand silk screened poster.
Nightwatch
In a whimsical examination of spectacle and the gaze, the artist Audrey Baldwin will watch passers-by from inside a shop window for several hours while wearing flaming candle-antlers.
The Loss Adjustors
A fictional organisation that seeks to satirise the frustrating EQC claims process that Cantabrians endure daily. Each ‘claimant’ will take away a unique and hand-crafted document created by the four artist employees of The Loss Adjusters.
SNAKES & LADDERS
GAS & FRACTURES
An interactive board game based on 'fracking'. The game outlines the impacts of hydraulic fracturing, commonly termed 'fracking'. Participants play as the owners of a gas extraction company, and compete against one another to produce methane gas. This free game is suitable for all ages.
