World class beers at national homebrew competition
Judges at the Society of Beer Advocates National Homebrew Competition were pleased with the high quality of beers
entered.
Of the 381 beers entered 108 gained a medal.
Feedback from previous year’s competitions seems to be helping brewers improve their beers.
“The overall quality of this year’s entries was much improved from 2010. Those that achieved a medal can be proud the
beers have achieved a high standard,” the head judge, Graeme Mahy, said.
72 different styles of beer were entered and judged by a panel of 12 against the same international standards as many
commercial competitions.
Brendan Bransgrove of Dunedin was crowned this year’s Champion Brewer.
New to homebrewing, Brendan said he was happy to take the title.
“It was a bit of a surprise to win since I’ve only been doing home brewing for 6 months!”
Brendan received a fermenter from Farra Stainless Steel for his efforts.
The champion beer was a New Zealand Pale Ale brewed by Richard Deeble of Wellington, scoring a near perfect 48/50. His
beer will be brewed commercially by Hallertau Brewery in the coming months.
