Australian script adviser/editor Claire Dobbin talks to American screenwriters Jim Hart (Hook, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Contact) and David Magee (Life of Pi, Finding Neverland, Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day) about establishing and maintaining a career as a screenwriter, staying engaged with your craft and the fine art of
adaptation.

Jim Hart is an American screenwriter and author whose writing/producing credits include a wide range of acclaimed feature films,
among them Hook (dir. Steven Spielberg), Bram Stoker’s Dracula(dir. Francis Ford Coppola), Muppet Treasure Island (dir. Brian Henson) and Contact (dir. Robert Zemeckis). Jim participates regularly in screenwriting workshops at the Sundance Film Lab in Utah,
éQuinoxe in Europe, the Hartley-Merrill Screenwriter workshops in California and the Austin Film Festival Writers Ranch.
David Magee’s first screenplay—for Finding Neverland (dir. Marc Forster)—went on to be nominated for seven Academy Awards, including one for Best Adapted Screenplay. Since
then, David has written 13 other screenplays including Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (dir. Bharat Nalluri). Most recently he adapted the novel The Life of Pi into a screenplay with director Ang Lee. David is a regular adviser on éQuinoxe Germany script workshops.
Claire Dobbin is an Australian script adviser/editor who works with development agencies around the world. Claire is on the board of
éQuinoxe Germany and is a script adviser to international participants of the workshop. For 14 years she was the Senior
Script Executive at the Australian Film Commission and Director of its Melbourne office. Claire is currently Chair of
the Melbourne International Film Festival.
