NZ House & Garden wins 2012 best magazine cover
The Maggies: Magazine Cover of the Year 2012 has been awarded to NZ House & Garden for its April issue.
80 covers were entered into this year’s awards before the judges narrowed the field to 25 and opened the awards to public vote. The NZ House & Garden cover was declared winner of both the Lifestyle category and Magazine Cover of the Year.
“Congratulations NZ House and Garden – the public have spoken. Our best and biggest critics have voted on the Maggies Cover of the year and you have come out clear winners from a field of very diverse and quality covers. An excellent example of a cover that invites you into the magazine,” says John McClintock, chair of the judging panel.
Created by NZ House & Garden’s art director Richard Brunton and stylist Sarah Charles the quirky blue, white and green cover was a three week labour of love, shot in a Petone villa, which cost editor Sally Duggan more than a few nights sleep.
“Look carefully at our cover this issue... Now look closer. Note the mad, mixed-up touches: the upside down bowl; the tea cup balancing on a jar; the misplaced silver lid, the knot of ribbon that looks just right,” says Sally Duggan in her editor’s letter back in March.
This artful arrangement is the sort of home creativity that the magazine celebrates: a clever mixture of beautiful things and a few surprises to get you thinking.
“I wish I could say we were clever enough to fling these arrangements together effortlessly,” says Sally, who goes on to list a series of challenges with looming deadlines to get that perfect shot.
“Creating a winning cover involves pleasing a cast of thousands,” she adds, facing the dilemma of every magazine editor when they make that crucial final decision.
This is one decision
she won’t regret with today’s award for best magazine
cover of 2012!
