Celebrating 10 burning years! KIWIBURN 2013: enlightenment
Where: Whakamaru Domain, Mangakino
When: 23–28 Jan 2013
Waikato – Kiwiburn is turning 10! From its humble beginnings in the south island, Kiwiburn has grown to become one of the most
successful officially sanctioned Burning Man events worldwide. Held in the beautiful Whakamaru Domain from 23-28 January
2013, Kiwiburn is based on the US Burning Man festival which encourages attendees to participate in all elements of the
festival. From organisation and planning to art and performance, everyone is encouraged to be involved in the creation
of the event.
There is so much that makes this event different from any other festival you may have experienced. Expect interactive
art installations, music, workshops, themed camps, drummers, fire performers and elaborately costumed participants.
There is no paid entertainment; participants build the event by themselves, for themselves, sharing their talents and
gifts. And it's lots of fun!
As with the Nevada burn, no money can be exchanged on site so people must arrive with everything necessary to survive.
And unlike the desert, Kiwiburn is blessed with rolling green paddocks and a lake, where many "burners" cool off or try
to take control of the resident pirate ship.
This year's art theme, enlighTENment, was chosen by the Kiwiburn community. Both the Man and the Temple are designed
with the theme in mind and are designed and built by teams of volunteers.
Each year the man is larger than the year before, and this year is no exception! The much anticipated burns are a
spectacular and unmissable experience with fire and drumming artists gathering to perform together. The man will be
consumed by flame on Saturday night with the Temple following on Sunday night.
