The Outlook for Someday Film Challenge Announces Its 2012 Winners

A Vital New Voice in Media Production

The voice of an emerging generation of film-makers speaks powerfully and clearly through the Winning Films in this year’s The Outlook for Someday sustainability film challenge for young people.

The 20 films are released today at www.theoutlookforsomeday.net where there is an online vote for Audience Favourite closing on 18 December.

Made by individuals and teams from 7 to 24 years old from all over New Zealand, the films tackle subjects ranging from climate change and recycling to the sustainability of language and culture.

A Judging Team of media, education, government and business people selected the 20 winners (listed below) from a record 191 entries, involving about 700 young people.

“These films represent the emergence of a vital new voice in media production - young, literate, articulate and ethical,” said Scott Wilson, Senior Lecturer in Performing and Screen Arts at Unitec, speaking on behalf of the Judging Team.

“The film-makers are committed, energetic and driven. They are exactly the voices our society needs and they speak loudly to the concerns we all face.”

“Excellently made, passionately told, fabulously fun - each film is a wonderful insight into an emerging group of socially conscious media practitioners and citizens.”

The winning film-makers will gather on Wednesday 5 December at the Aotea Centre in Auckland’s THE EDGE performing arts and entertainment hub for The Someday Awards red-carpet ceremony.

As well as receiving a prize package worth over $1000 the young film-makers will each find out which of the 20 Special Awards (listed below) they have won.

The finale will be the announcement and screening of the film chosen as The Body Shop Standout Winner. Its director will receive Unitec courses or film production facilities to the value of $8000.

Now in its 6th year, The Outlook for Someday challenge is to make a short sustainability-related film. It can be any genre, filmed with any camera and any length up to 5 minutes. Anyone up to age 24 can enter, either individually or in a team.

In 2011 The Outlook for Someday was officially recognised by UNESCO as a project of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. In 2012 it was a finalist in New Zealand’s Green Ribbon Awards.
