THE MUSIC ROOM: THE WRONG SIDE OF
THE TRACKS | PETER DONOVAN
OPENING: 5.30 - 7.30pm Monday 26 November.
OPEN: 11.00am - 6.00pm Tuesday - Saturday.
Born in the Hawke’s Bay, Donovan trained as an art teacher and has been a regular exhibitor for over 20 years. This show reveals Donovan in the true spirit of the anthem of American Blues music, whose roots lie in the American Civil War, an ethos which has consistently been at the heart of his work. Naive in style, the content is far from it. This is social commentary, central to which is the conduit of musicianship as the expression of the humanity, the soul of man in the company of friends and neighbours to share the rhythmic uplifting poetics of life, in all its diversity. Which side or which track you are on does not matter, music transcends the divide, crossing boundaries through time and space. This exhibition projects, and tracks the heritage of the Blues on both canvas and objects, tapping into the keeping-it-real ethos of everyday lives of people on the street: their stories, our stories, here, there and elsewhere.

THE WOLF AND THE FOX: 'FAIRYTALE'
CHARACTERS AND CREATURES | RIEKO AND
MINU
OPENING: 6.00pm Tuesday 4 December.
OPEN: 11.00am - 7.00pm Wednesday - Sunday.
Following their successful "A Curious Nature" art exhibition at Thistle Hall in November 2011, Wellington based Artists Rieko and Minu would like to introduce their new exhibition concept "The Wolf and The Fox".
"The Wolf and The Fox" juxtaposes the mystical Kitsune (Red Fox) tales from Japan and the classic Bad Wolf from Germany folk tales, challenging the viewer to explore different viewpoints and meanings between the known - and unknown - archetypes and symbols.
The show will include oil, acrylic, works on paper, plush creatures and sculptures set side by side, creating a theatre like scenery.
Rieko
The fairytale
characters in Rieko's portraits seem to be reluctant to
reveal their stories. Her anthropomorphic animals are placed
in sceneries that seem to be taken from almost forgotten
childhood tales. Both subjects have a curious nature giving
the viewer a window into their character and feelings. Her
paintings are influenced by the pop surrealism movement,
while maintaining a romantic innocence.
Minu
Minu's
creations are influenced by European folk tales and
traditional book illustration, as well as the contemporary
illustrations in pop and street art culture. Her cute
characters reveal an often melancholic and almost
mischievous side at the second glance. Originally from
Germany, Minu now works as an illustrator, printmaker and
toymaker in Wellington. Her work is known from her
participation in several group shows in Wellington, as well
as her appearances at the New Zealand Artshow in 2010 and
2011.
