Last week at the 96th Labour Party annual conference a serious challenge to the Labour Party leadership was successfully
seen off by incumbent David Shearer. Challenger David Cunniliffe was subsequently demoted to the back benches. Some
political commentators are saying that far from under - minding David Shearers leadership these recent events have
strengthened his position and public profile as leader with unanimous support from his caucus.
Ngawai talks with Dr Bruce Gregory about his recollection of the leadership struggles within the Labour Party during his
time in parliament especially around the late David Lange era, when he was going head to head with Roger Douglas and
Richard Prebble. Dr. Gregory also gives his view on whether or not David Shearer can withstand another challenge and how
long does he think Shearer can be Labours leader, given the critics view that he’s wholly ineffective in a leadership
role.

This year marks the 21st Birthday of the Maori Sports Awards. The Maori Sports Awards 2012, is being held this Saturday
night at the Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre, in Manukau City, South Auckland.
Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa Incorporated was formed in 1991 by the late Albie Pryor who had a vision of promoting and encouraging Maori athletes in the pursuit of excellence in their chosen sports.
An inaugural Maori Sports Awards function was held at Turangawaewae Marae in 1991 to acknowledge Maori sporting achievement. The Maori Sports Awards is now a prestigious annual event that
showcases outstanding Maori sportsmen and sportswomen.
Tamati Reedy is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Maori Sports Awards, he shares with Ngawai the history of the awards from
its inception to now and shares his whakaaro on whether or not Maori Athletes are given the recognition they deserve by
non Maori sporting authorities in Aotearoa.
