Mt Zion Ready for World Premiere and NZ Release

MEDIA RELEASE November 20, 2012

MT ZION Ready for World Premiere and New Zealand Release

The new feature film, MT ZION, starring Stan Walker and Temuera Morrison, is now completed and gearing up for its New Zealand release on February 6, 2013.

MT ZION will have its World Premiere on February 4 at Event Cinemas Manukau complex. The red-carpet premiere will be attended by many of the film’s cast in addition to Walker and Morrison. Organisers expect David Wikaira-Paul (known as Tama from Shortland Street), Darcy-Ray Flavell-Hudson (aka “ghost chips” from the “Legend” TV commercial) and Northland musician Troy Kingi to be there. These three, with Walker, make up the band in the film, known as Small Axe.

Stan Walker plays Turei, a talented singer who dreams of his band playing the support act for Bob Marley’s 1979 tour. But it’s a dream that challenges the traditions and values of his upbringing and will set him at odds with his family - particularly his father (Morrison), a true man of the land. The film features original music in a uniquely Māori take on Marley’s reggae.

Mt Zion is written and directed by Tearepa Kahi (Taua), who drew inspiration for the story from his own family background. It is produced by Taua producer Quinton Hita of Kura Productions, through production company Small Axe Films, and executive produced by Christina Milligan (Nights in the Gardens of Spain). Funding is from the New Zealand Film Commission, NZ On Air, Maori Television and Te Mangai Paho. The New Zealand distributor is Sony Pictures NZ. NZ Film, the sales arm of the NZFC, is handling world sales of the film.

The film’s distributor, Sony Pictures, chose the unconventional release date – February 6 is a Wednesday, not the normal Thursday – to coincide with both the anniversary of Bob Marley’s birthday and Waitangi Day.
