Recycling for Karma is Addictive!

PRESS RELEASE

16th November 2012

Recycling for Karma is Addictive!

Love NZ’s Karma campaign celebrates over 16,000 drink and food containers recycled

At the half way point in Love NZ’s “It’s a Karma Thing” campaign, Kiwis have recycled over 16,000 drink and food containers or around 0.5 tonnes of packaging into Love NZ recycling bins situated nationwide and with recycling numbers increasing each day organizers are optimistic that the campaign will hit its target of 50,000 items recycled.

Lyn Mayes, Manager of Love NZ Programme says the campaign is tracking at over 1000 Smart Phone or Text entries every day and Facebook and twitter feedback is providing excellent information about how, where and what New Zealanders prefer to recycle.

“Councils have put the Karma stickers on over 1000 Love NZ recycling bins nationwide and with every bin individually identified Love NZ can compare which regions have got the most backing for “Karma” and which Love NZ bins get the most use. Leading the charge at present with the most Karma entries is Auckland’s CBD followed by Dunedin and Wellington. Stand out performers are Auckland’s Aotea Square and Auckland Airport.”

The campaign is championed by Coca-Cola Amatil NZ, Trade Me, Vodafone, The Warehouse and Countdown with support from councils and venues across the country. Companies have donated prizes which are won by Karma participants including electronics, phones, BBQ’s, travel, entertainment and shopping vouchers.

Already sixteen cool prizes are on their way to those recyclers who have had their good work rewarded with Karma - including an Ipad and Ipod touch donated by The Warehouse, $250 Countdown grocery vouchers and $500 BP petrol vouchers. All these wonderful prizes are available for just ‘doing the right thing’ and recycling your beverage or food container; it couldn’t be easier.

Countdown has promoted Karma on its Countdown Today slot on TVNZ with an appeal to “Join Countdown as we help New Zealanders put the Love back into recycling.” http://www.lovenz.org.nz/news/post/love-nz-at-countdown

Trade Me has got behind the campaign promoting a special Cool Auction prize donated by Coca-Cola Amatil with all proceeds going back to Love NZ to buy even more public place recycling bins. http://www.trademe.co.nz/travel-events-activities/activities/auction-531019836.htm

Coca-Cola Amatil Managing Director George Adams says the company is thrilled with the uptake of the Karma campaign. “We want to inspire and motivate New Zealanders to recycle when they’re out and about the same way they do at home with their kerb side collection. This initiative is fun, it’s rewarding and it means we get empty beverage containers being put where they’re meant to - in the recycling bin”.

The Warehouse CEO, Mark Powell says aligning with Love NZ makes perfect sense: “As a large New Zealand company, The Warehouse is dedicated to supporting our country’s environment and keeping New Zealand beautiful.”

Theres still time to get involved. The campaign runs until 10th December, so you can do your part to help reach the target of 50,000 recyclable items into Love NZ bins.
