Album of the Week
Sharkness - Coat Of Arms

Acceptable coats of arms are emblazoned with creatures and symbols that represent the bearer in good light - lions, eagles, scales of justice and stallions. One does not put dodos, guinea-pigs or goldfish on their coat of arms.
But Coat Of Arms the album is not your usual mix of creatures. Sharkness (Robin Hinkley) has synthetic and angular pop ditties pose with mild embarrassment alongside antisocial reels and introspective dirges. Hectic rock numbers carouse with earnest folk songs. The odd sensible ballad gazes, disapprovingly at the whole affair.
He has brought together an alluring mix of elements, forging a cohesive album that is ominous and beautiful on occasion, irreverent at times, but that is compelling from start to finish.

Single of the Week
Pieter T - Make Believe

Make Believe is the new Pieter T single, following his previous hit It Would Be You.
There is no doubt that Pieter T (Pieter Tuhoro) is carving a path to the top. With his debut album Life, Love And Lessons thoroughly thrashed and his loyal fan-base expanding, Pieter aims his sights on his second album, which fuses reggae, soul, dance and hip-hop and parallels his work with youth at risk as an ambassador for Youthline NZ.

Fat Freddy's Drop - Silver And Gold

Blackbird, the upcoming studio album from perennial soul shakers Fat Freddys Drop, takes a step closer to touchdown with the release of new single Silver And Gold.
The single is available now as a free digital download, right here at Amplifier.
Silver and Gold will be released with bonus instrumental track Bohannon Dub on limited edition 12" vinyl in December.
Conjured up during a series of epic sessions at the band's Wellington studio, Silver And Gold started life as an unruly instrumental jam with the working title Skunkadilla. It was an entirely appropriate moniker at the time, given the track sounds like the monster love child of George Clinton, The Congos & John Lee Hooker. Underpinned by Dobie Blaze's wobbly synth-bass and the crunchy skank of Jetlag's guitar, DJ Fitchie added his straight-to-the-point banging beat.

Ariana Tikao - From Dust To Light

It has been four years since Ariana Tikao's last solo album, Tuia, which received great praise at home and abroad.
Tikao's highly anticipated release From Dust To Light, is primarily inspired by the devastating earthquake in her hometown of Christchurch.
"Dust rose above the city that day from crumbling buildings. As you can imagine, it not only affected us physically, but emotionally and spiritually," says Ariana. "From the wreckage though, people are picking themselves up, forging ahead into new growth and opportunities."

The Black Seeds have a reputation for major live performances and impressive albums that display their distinctive sound that blends infectious melodies, big-beat funk, dub, soul sprinkled with fusion jazz and stirred with vintage roots-reggae.
Led by the vocals of Barnaby Weir and Daniel Weetman, The Black Seeds' music crosses boundaries with wanton abandon to great effect. From start to finish this album pulses on many levels.
