21st anniversary of Collections Fashion Show
Plus DEBRIEF design exhibition, film screening and pop-up shop

A special 21st anniversary Collections Fashion Show is being held next week as part of excite 12, the annual, end-of-year student showcase at Otago Polytechnic.

Students from the Polytechnic’s School of Design and the International Fashion Academy Paris in Shanghai will grace the catwalk, fresh from both institutions’ shows at Shanghai Fashion Week last month. A limited edition book celebrating Collections’ 21st anniversary milestone will also be available for sale.

In the 21 years since Collections made its debut in 1991, this spectacular Otago Polytechnic fashion parade has become a favourite fixture on the city’s arts calendar.

“Collections is more than a fashion show; it’s a celebration that connects students with the families, friends, industry and staff that have supported and helped them,” explains Academic Leader – Fashion, Margo Barton. ”Graduates spend more than 100 weeks studying towards these minutes of fame!”

Also part of excite 12 is DEBRIEF, a free, unique exhibition showcasing a diverse range of commercial and community-based design work sure to inspire the public and prospective students. Created by students working collaboratively across all design disciplines, DEBRIEF is an opportunity to see the work of Communication, Fashion, Interiors and Product Design students up close.

There’s also a pop-up shop where the public can purchase limited edition student creations, and an installation of designs by students from the Shanghai University of Engineering Science in China. There will also be DEBRIEF catalogue of student work available for purchase on-site.

A student film showcase, Rewind: Student Film Screening will also be held at Hoyts Cinemas as part of the end-of-year celebrations.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the public to see the work of the next generation of designers about to embark on their careers,” says DEBRIEF/Collections Publicity Manager and final-year Bachelor of Design (Communication) student, Royce Madigan. “I’m really excited to climb into the design industry – I’m privileged to have the opportunity to turn my passion into a lifestyle.”
