Shakespeare Goes Down To The Farm
William Shakespeare’s musical comedy, As You Like It, gets a real Kiwiana twist in Stagecraft’s final production for 2012.
Classic Kiwi songs replace the bard’s ‘hey nonny nonny’ efforts, the hero’s wrestling match becomes a sheep shearing competition and the forest of Arden is transformed into a country pub of the same name.
Director Benjamin Haddock says the intent was to capture the fun in the way Shakespeare might have done himself if he visited modern day, rural New Zealand.
“Of all Shakespeare’s works, his comedies have proved to be the most popular and this production aims to keep the play accessible to all,” says Benjamin.
“In fact what we’ve been particularly thrilled about is that our earliest bookings were by primary school groups. They’ll get to hear real Shakespeare being spoken, but the Kiwi costumes, songs and references will make it much easier for them to be in on the jokes.”
As You Like It, is on at the Gryphon Theatre, 22 Ghuznee Street and runs from 21 November to 1 December with tickets $22 or $20. Group bookings discounts are available. Booking fees may apply.
Bookings can be made at www.stagecraft.co.nz or ph 0508iticket (0508 484253)
