NZB’s Southern Bonus Set to be Struck Tomorrow

New Zealand Bloodstock’s inaugural Southern Bonus Race will be held on Ladies Day at Riccarton racecourse tomorrow and will see eight three-year-olds compete for the $50,000 race bonus.

The Southern Bonus Race is an open three-year-old event over 1400 metres, with qualified 2011 South Island Sale graduates holding preference in field selection, and a $50,000 Bonus set to be won by the first qualified graduate past the post.

This means that qualified horse doesn’t have to win the race to take the bonus, they only have to be the first qualified horse across the line.

Heading the eight Southern Bonus Race qualified horses is the last start winner Kostalot (Any Suggestion) who was very impressive when winning at Timaru by 1.75 lengths for his trainer Neil Coulbeck. He has drawn barrier 12 for tomorrow’s race with Jamie Bullard to ride.

The Sharon Robertson trained Shaspic (Danroad) comes into the race off a good last start second at Waimate in mid-October and will be ridden by jockey Robert Hannam from barrier seven.

Michael Pitman will saddle two Southern Bonus Race qualified horses with Snowdon (Coats Choice), who will make his debut in tomorrow’s race after winning both of his trials, and Strawberry Blonde (Brilliance) who was unplaced on her debut earlier this month.

The Steve Anderton trained Langton Katie (Remind) and Steven Prince trained Madam Dusautoir (Bachelor Duke) have both shown ability on the track, both running third on debut, and have drawn wide in barriers 13 and 19 respectively.

Gallant Trick (Gallant Guru) who finished behind race rival Kostalot at his last start at Timaru will line up for trainer Russell McKay and will jump from barrier four.

The Nikki & Barrie Blatch trained Ready To Rule (Perfectly Ready) completes the field and will be looking to record his first victory in the race from the tough barrier of 20.

Of the $50,000 Bonus, $40,000 shall be paid to the owners of the horse on raceday, with $5,000 paid to the trainer and $5,000 to the person(s) who owned the Bonus-winning horse at the time of Sale.
