UCOL musicians to rock the Regent
A tin of baked beans is a small price to pay to see the musical stars of tomorrow at the Rhythm and Turbines concert on
Saturday 17 November.
UCOL’s Certificate in Contemporary Music Performance students will be unleashed on the Regent on Broadway stage to present their end of year showcase and a donation of a can of food for the Palmerston North Foodbank is the
entry fee.
Among influences such as Kimbra, Neil Young, Bob Marley, Elvis, Queen, Michael Jackson, The Who and The Black Keys, the
two hour musical extravaganza is open to the general public.
UCOL Contemporary Music Programme Leader and Lecturer Kane Parsons says, “This event is very focused on original music,
and gives students the opportunity to perform their songs in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful venues.”
There will be CDs for sale on the night that feature a selection of the student's original music.
The performances at the showcase will be based on a range of musical genres the budding musicians have studied during
the year including rock, pop, blues, soul and country.
“Being taught and mentored by professional musicians such as; Warren Maxwell (Fat Freddy’s Drop), Steve Smith
(Journey),Harry Lyon (Hello Sailor) and legendary jazz artist Kurt Elling, the students have experienced huge growth and
confidence in their skills this year,” says Kane.
When asked, the musicians said they were keen to give back to the community that had put so much into supporting local
music, and were especially interested in engaging their young audience. "In ten or so years they could be the people
listening to the music we make" quips one younger guitarist.
UCOL’s Certificate in Contemporary Music Performance is a one year full-time programme offered at the Palmerston North, Whanganui and Wairarapa campuses.
