Volunteers honoured by Save the Children

Volunteers honoured by Save the Children for almost 9000 hours years of long-service!

Save the Children New Zealand has recognised volunteers who together have given over 9000 hours, a combined 154 years of dedicated service in support of the organisation’s work for children in New Zealand and overseas.

The long service award winners, announced at Save the Children’s Annual General Meeting held in Wellington last weekend, were:

· Amy Hill, Nelson, more than 20 years

· Anne Green, South Auckland, 25 years

· Margaret Hayward, Kapiti Coast, more than 20 years

· Beverly Paterson, Wairarapa, 23 years

· Judy Walker, Christchurch, more than 20 years

· Gillian Saunders, Wellington, 26 years

· Joyce Doull, Thames, more than 20 years.

“When it comes to supporting charities, New Zealanders are generous. We continuously rank high on global charitable giving indices and a third of kiwis volunteer their time,” said Save the Children New Zealand’s outgoing Chief Executive, Liz Gibbs.

“Since Save the Children New Zealand was founded in 1947, volunteers have been at the very heart of our organisation and we are extremely grateful for their support. Their dedication means we are able to help children around the world, including right here in New Zealand,” she said.

Today more than 1000 New Zealanders volunteer their time for Save the Children New Zealand. Their fundraising supports work for children in New Zealand, the Pacific, Asia and in response to emergencies around the world.

“In New Zealand, Save the Children runs leadership and advocacy programmes for young people, enabling them to voice their opinions on issues that matter to them. We also support education programmes in the Pacific and Asia, including an early childhood education programme in Fiji.

“We couldn’t do all this without those volunteers who give their time and raise donations so it’s fitting that we honour them this way,” said Miss Gibbs.
