Up The Punks 2012 is an exciting exhibition opening in November 2012 exploring 35 years of Wellington's underground punk scene.
Ten years on from the original show the Up The Punks team of photographer John Lake, visual artist Kerry Ann Lee and friends are returning to Wellington's home of punk, Thistle Hall, with an all new updated visual extravaganza that will blow your mind with fantastic facts about Wellington you didn't know you didn't know or had long since buried in a cider induced memory hole.
Since 2002 we've accumulated a whole lot more material thanks to the wonders of the interwebs and from 2011 this has been progressively added to an expanding online archive that you can check out at www.upthepunks.co.nz.
In November 2012 we want to revisit this 35 years of local history with an all new dynamic exhibition in which you the viewer can add your stories to the mix. We'll be installing panels around the gallery, chucking up a few hundred of the choicest images and inviting everyone to write their stories directly onto the walls. Think of it as a walk-in discussion thread that will feed more information into the archive!
During the exhibition we'll be producing a zine, screening a mega upload of video footage, putting together a walking tour map of punk sites for your snazzy smart-phone, and holding a couple of gigs showcasing some really awesome bands that have all been a part of Wellington's vibrant scene over 35 years.
