Germany Snaps up Fresh Meat

German rights for New Zealand horror comedy, Fresh Meat, have been snapped up by Capelight Pictures. NZ Film Head of Sales & Marketing James Thompson, negotiated the deal with Steffen Gerlach from Capelight.

Fresh Meat premiered at the Hawaii International Film Festival and was released theatrically in New Zealand on the 25th of October. Variety reviewer Richard Kuipers said of the film "With a background that includes co-scripting Peter Jackson's raunchy 1989 "spluppet" comedy Meet the Feebles, helmer Mulheron injects plenty of visual energy into the proceedings."

New Zealand critics describe the film as “this decade’s answer to Bad Taste, Brain Dead and Black Sheep”, and “pretty much equal to Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste when it comes to blood and gore. But Fresh Meat never views like a movie made (just) for splatter-lovers. Instead it is filled with mischievous references to many things that right-minded people hold dear.”

Starring Temuera Morrison (Once Were Warriors, River Queen, Vertical Limit) as the head of a family of modern-day, middle-class cannibals unwittingly taken hostage by a gang of escaped prisoners, Fresh Meat is the directorial debut for Danny Mulheron, who has previously worked with Peter Jackson on the sixth and final instalment of A Nightmare on Elm Street (Dream Lover) and Meet the Feebles. The film was produced by Dave Gibson (The Irrefutable Truth About Demons, Silent One) and financed by the New Zealand Film Commission with the assistance of the New Zealand government’s Screen Production Incentive Fund.
