SUBWAY® wishes YOU a happy World Sandwich Day!
Saturday 3 November is World Sandwich Day – the day sandwiches are in the spotlight.
The history of the humble sandwich
It is believed that the sandwich was named after a British aristocrat, John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich in the 18th century. Legend has it that Montagu ordered his valet to bring him meat tucked between two slices of bread during a 24-hour gambling session. People started to demand “give me the same as Sandwich”. Now we salute the mighty sandwich every year on World Sandwich Day – the 3rd of November.
How to get behind World Sandwich Day
• Create a new sandwich with a combination of toppings you’ve never tried before
• Have a picnic with family and friends – pack plenty of sandwiches
• Surprise a loved one with a sandwich for lunch
• Create the world’s biggest sandwich! (Will it surpass a SUBWAY® Giant Sub?)
• Head along to your local SUBWAY® restaurant for New Zealand’s most popular ‘sandwich’ – the SUBWAY® Sub!
Fun Facts about SUBWAY® and the 6 Foot Giant Sub
• Each 6 Foot Sub is made from 16- SUBWAY FOOTLONG® rolls plaited together and baked.
• A 6 Foot Sub takes 30 minutes to assemble and feeds up to 20 people.
• If you placed all the sandwiches made by SUBWAY® in a year end to end, they would wrap around the world at least six times.
• If you take all of the cheese that is produced for SUBWAY® in a year and place each slice end to end, they will reach half way to the moon!
• There are more than two million sandwich combinations available from SUBWAY®.
SUBWAY® World Sandwich Day is a local initiative launched in 2009.
