New Zealand junior cycling squad announced
Forty under-17 and under-19 cyclists were named today in a BikeNZ/BRT Junior Development Squad, to participate in a road racing development programme which includes a number of camps and competitions.
The focus of this programme will be on educating and assisting the riders in their development, and while it does not guarantee their selection to future New Zealand teams, is a significant achievement in each of their cycling pathways.
“This squad is not a team. Instead, being in this squad will allow riders a chance to gain the resources they need to improve their riding,” said BikeNZ development manager Amy Taylor.
“If they want to go on to be future professionals or Olympic champions, they need to learn what it takes now, and we will be assessing them on their attitude, ability to learn, and many other things.”
For those riders who missed out on selection, there will be an opportunity to gain entry to the squad throughout the coming year, should they perform well.
“There could be a rider who missed out on selection and goes on to be the best in the world, but ultimately we have to choose those who we believe are ready for what we have to offer,” said Taylor.
