Wellingtonians’ opportunity to support refugees
Wednesday 14th of November will be a one-off opportunity to see an award winning film and to support refugee-background communities throughout the Wellington region.
“The fundraiser is an opportunity for Wellingtonians to have a great night out and support our work with over 14 different refugee-background communities,” says Tim O’Donovan, General Manager of ChangeMakers Refugee Forum.
The film Monsieur Lazhar has received a number of awards and has been described as ‘unforgettable’ and ‘one of the very best films of the year’.
“The resilience and determination of Monsieur Lazhar who struggles to find his feet in a new country is as inspiring as that of people from refugee backgrounds, whose challenges do not end when arriving in New Zealand, but rather continue throughout the resettlement process,” says O’Donovan.
ChangeMakers supports people from refugee backgrounds to participate fully in New Zealand life through community development, research and advocacy activities, working with refugee-background women, youth, and community leaders. Funds raised will contribute to the running of two projects in particular: a drivers’ licence programme for refugee-background women, and ChangeMakers’ Refugees into Business programme.
Tickets purchased for the film double as a raffle ticket with prizes kindly supplied by Commonsense Organics, The Guava Tree, and the Warehouse. The film will be showing at Penthouse Cinema, Wednesday 14th of November. Raffles will be drawn at 8pm, followed by screening of the film at 8:30pm.
