The Wishing Tree
Enchanting improv returns to Wellington
20- 24 November at BATS Theatre
Returning to BATS Theatre this November, The Wishing Tree is New Zealand’s magical season of improvised theatre.
According to an ancient Japanese myth, there is but one enchanting night a year where wishes come true. In honour of this myth, some of New Zealand's finest improv artists conjure up stories inspired by the wishes of the audience. Hang your honest wish upon the tree and watch as we explore the uncharted territory of our dreams. But be careful what you wish for...
Director Christine Brooks describes the concept as "a different kind of improv. A lot of improv shows are a bit of fun, but can end up being pretty disposable, like a comedy version of a one night stand. The Wishing Tree creates improvised theatre that I want to remember in the morning."
Based on a format created by Rama Nicholas of Impro Melbourne, The Wishing Tree has been performed around the world, from Belgium to Seattle, inspiring performers and audiences alike. Last seen at BATS Theatre in a sell-out season in 2010, WIT is excited to bring this show back to the theatre where it made its debut.
"The intimacy and ambience was enchanting..." - Theatreview
"...considerable theatrical bravery." – The Dominion Post
"Elegant and touching … you must go and experience the show for yourself." - Salient
Starring WIT regulars, including many favourites last seen in improvised soap The Young and the Witless IV, this year’s season of The Wishing Tree will bring your true desires to life in a theatre experience like no other this November.
