Artspace New Artists Show Part 1 & Part 2.
18 October – 22 December
The Artspace NewArtist show is an annual ‘litmus test’ for new and exciting art practice in New Zealand. In 2012 the exhibition will be articulated in 2 parts:
New Artists
Show part 1, 18 October – 17 November takes the form of a
group show featuring Karin Hofko, Lance Pearce, Ella
Sutherland, Shannon Te Ao and Iain Frengley, curated by the
Artspace curatorial team, Caterina Riva and Alex
Davidson.
The collaborative duo Karin Hofko will present a performance on the opening night at 7pm. AUT Masters student Lance Pearce’s sculptural installations employ common or everyday materials that, stripped of their original functionality suggest narrative but ultimately displace certainty or resolution. Christchurch based graphic designer Ella Sutherland will exhibit her analysis of All the cars stolen in Auckland accompanied by the publication Popular brands to steal and Shannon Te Ao and Iain Frengley launch a new collaborative video work shot on location at Andersons Bay, Dunedin. Te Ao and Frengley are the current artists in residence at the Rita Angus cottage in Wellington, their collaboration includes video work that is produced while documenting site specific performances.
New Artists Show part 2, 27 November – 22 December will involve a group of 21 new artists orchestrating an evolving exhibition Drinking from the fire hose. Rather than receiving individual recognition, the group experiments with collective authorship, including decision-making, negotiation, adjustments, and ultimately the shared ownership of the exhibition. Earlier in the year Riva encountered an exhibition initiated by this group of young artists, who are all at university together and was impressed by the energy and the rhythm of the show, from there she took the cue to invite them to do something similar at Artspace. Drinking from the fire hose will unfold from the initial planning to a closing exhibition finissage, with performances and events along the way.
In parallel with the New Artist Show will be 2 separate exhibitions in the Mezzanine space, Robin Murphy Notes on vacancy, 18 October – 17 November. Murphy presents footage of vacant commercial spaces around Auckland city. Her work emerges from an interest in the ways in which the form of the city impacts upon its occupants in terms of psychogeography, and in documenting monuments and testaments to the city’s history. From 27 November – 22 December Deborah Crowe and Eldon Booth will install [Eddy]II, a surround sound sculpture that will occupy and engage with the Mezzanine space.
Events will be posted on the Artspace website as they develop www.artspace.org.nz
