will be gone! WOMAD is excited to announce that a limited
number of early bird tickets for 2013 will go on sale to
Womad subscribers today and on general sale from 9am Monday
15th October. The delicious artist selection for WOMAD 2013
suggests that this year early bird tickets will sell very
fast indeed.
The full artist line-up
is due to be officially announced at a parliamentary launch
on 31st October but with excitement building around some of
the impressive collection of artists – it’s impossible
not to drop just a few of the tastiest names.
Headliner and multi-award winning jazz master Hugh Masekela for starters. The legendary South African born composer and musician is as well known for his chart topping US pop hits as he is for his use of music to affect social and political change. Over his long and stunning career, this oft feted maestro has been the subject of several documentaries and has collaborated with the who’s who of jazz in Africa and in the US.
Twenty five years after he first collaborated with Paul Simon, and now legendary South African musicians Miriam Makeba and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, on the Graceland album and subsequent tour – Hugh was part of the anniversary celebration in Hyde Park earlier this year where he starred alongside Paul Simon and reggae star, Jimmy Cliff.
WOMAD organisers are delighted to have both Hugh and the reggae uber legend and fellow headliner, Jimmy Cliff on the WOMAD line-up for 2013.
Jimmy Cliff has had an extraordinary and prolific music career that has spanned 50 years. He is often credited with popularising reggae music world wide (with hits such as “The Harder They Come” and “Many Rivers to Cross”) and was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. He has spent much of the last decade touring the world’s significant music festivals and in 2011 released his latest EP – The Sacred Fire.
And as if that isn’t enough to set the WOMAD punters alight, those who grab an early bird ticket will also secure the chance to revel in the breathtaking singer/ song writer and banjo player - Abigail Washburn.
Abigail’s lush and ethereal performance has featured on TEDX and she has been described by Newsweek as having created a joyous and gorgeous sound defined as Appalachian Folk –Pop mixing old time Americana and traditional Chinese folk music. Beguiling and inspiring, this blonde blue-eyed banjo player is an early pick for festval goers “Must See” lists. For her WOMAD New Zealand debut, Abigail will be accompanied by instrumentalist and musician Kai Welch.
WOMAD 2013 also sees the welcome return of Jax Hamilton, the NZ Masterchef runner up who will host the Nova Energy Taste The World Stage after being one of the most popular draw cards last year.
WOMAD 2013 presents hundreds of performers from 20 countries over 30 hours on seven stages.
