Celebrating Arts and Culture, Student City style
The Student City Arts and Cultural Awards are drawing near, with applications closing 2 October. The annual awards recognises Palmerston North’s most vibrant, talented and dedicated tertiary students involved in the regions clubs, societies, events and the arts.
Massey University English and Media Studies tutor and 2012 awards judge Joy Green says, “Student recognition is vital to encouraging and expanding participation. The awards help to create a symbiotic relationship between city and students in which everyone benefits.”
Student success and involvement in literary, theatre, dance, music, and visual art, contributes to the city’s vitality, and highlights Palmerston North as the place to study. Massey University, UCOL, IPC and Te Wananga o Aotearoa all offer programmes that develop research, talent and performances of the highest calibre. Previous winners have gone on to develop their arts careers, both locally and nationally.
“It was nice to get an award for all the hard work”, says Trent Pedley, the 2011 Emerging Artist recipient. Since his award Trent has been part of a live installation at Te Manawa, performed in Summer Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, and a Massey University Drama Society production. He is currently preparing for a Festival of New Arts play. “It’s a lot of fun meeting and working great people in different performances (theatre, dance and poetry)”, says Trent.
14 October is the Student City Arts and Cultural Awards evening, held at the convention centre, and open to those that have nominated others or been nominated, along with special guests. The overall awards of Most Promising Club, Emerging Artist, Club of the Year and Artist of the Year receive trophies and cash prizes. In addition to the student awards there is also the Contribution to Student Arts by a Non-student Award to acknowledge those who show continued service and support to student arts.
