Stroma Concert To Feature Leading International Flute Player and World Premiere Performance
One of the world’s greatest flute players, Italy’s Roberto Fabbriciani joins Wellington contemporary music ensemble Stroma for a special one night only concert in October.
The concert, Luminous
Horizon is on Thursday 11 October at Ilott
Theatre, Wellington Town Hall. It is the first in a series
of three concerts from Stroma.
In his first visit to New
Zealand, Roberto Fabbriciani will perform a
number of works including the world premiere of Paulo
Cavallone’s Horos for flute and ensemble.
Roberto is considered one of the leading flute players in the world and collaborates with luminaries including Berio, Maderna, Nono and Sciarrino. He has worked with many of the world’s leading composers including Olivier Messiaen and Nino Rota.
Luminous Horizon features landscape-themed music with the programme also including New Zealand composer Dorothy Ker's Water Mountain, Kaija Saariaho's shimmering Cloud Trio and Gérard Pesson's Nebenstück, a delicate deconstruction of a Brahms piano work.
The second concert in this three-concert series will be Arnold Schoenberg’s chilling surreal classic Pierrot Lunaire on Sunday 25 November featuring soprano Madeleine Pierard; and on Sunday 9 December Wellington multi-instrumentalist Adam Page joins Stroma in Blue Page, an evening of blues-inspired works for ensemble featuring pieces by Adam, as well as Jack Body, Michael Norris and Jacob ter Veldhuis.
Stroma is one of New Zealand’s premier contemporary chamber ensembles bringing new sonic experiences to New Zealand audiences. Since its formation in 2000, Stroma has performed regularly, with a repertoire of fresh, cutting-edge compositions. The Wellington-based ensemble includes New Zealand Symphony Orchestra section principals and players, and the ensemble is conducted by one of New Zealand’s leading young conductors, Hamish McKeich.
