Rolling Pin (NZ) Edges Closer to Randwick Feature

The Group 1 Epsom Handicap nominated Rolling Pin (NZ) took a positive step towards Sydney’s feature spring mile yesterday winning the A$150,000 Group 3 Patinack Farm Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle for trainer Gwenda Markwell.

Ridden by Christian Reith, Rolling Pin (Pins x Gypsy's Daughter) enjoyed an uncontested lead in the Group 3 and quickened nicely in the straight, holding off his rivals to win by half-a-neck and running the last 600 metres in a strong 34.4 seconds.

The victory was the five-year-old’s first at stakes level but the son of Pins is no stranger to winning with yesterday’s success taking his winning tally to seven from 22 starts.

This season has seen Rolling Pin take a big step up in class, resuming in the Group 3 Missile Stakes when running third behind Pinwheel (Lonhro), and contesting the Group 2 Warwick Stakes and Group 3 Tramway Handicap leading into yesterday’s race.

Bred by Josie Hines, Rolling Pin was purchased by Matthew Sandblom from Mark & Shelley Treweek’s Lyndhurst Farm at the 2009 Karaka Premier Sale for $150,000. Raced by Matthew Sandblom and Mr S Brodie, the five-year-old has won A$280,000 in stakes.

Rolling Pin is the 45th stakes winner for his sire Pins who stands at Waikato Stud. Pins is coming off the back of another successful season with his son Ambitious Dragon (NZ) earning back-to-back Horse of the Year titles in Hong Kong.
