Renowned Ukulele Trio headed for the River City
Ukuleles headlining at Rivercity Caboodle 2013
Earlier this year Mainstreet Wanganui closed off parts of the CBD to create a carnival atmosphere for the inaugural
Rivercity Caboodle. The event was such a hit with visitors and locals alike that planning is already well underway for
the next one and Mainstreet has managed to secure one of New Zealand’s top ukulele acts to headline it. ‘The Nukes’ are
an Auckland based trio who play original pieces composed for ukulele and their unique blend of humour, nostalgia,
kiwiana and charm has delighted audiences all over the country. The Nukes are: David Parker (Rhythm Cage, The Parker
Project), Ben Collier (Goldenhorse, The Magnets) and David Thiele (or Snapper as they call him on stage) is the
eccentric glue that binds them all. With ukulele music now back in vogue this group are sure to be a hit with music
lovers of all ages.
In the past two years The Nukes have been stirring up a huge national following with a succession of performances at
festivals such as The Bluff Oyster Festival, Splore, Hamilton Garden Festival, Coromandel Ukulele Festival, Devonport
Food & Wine Festival, Hawkes Bay and NZ Ukulele Festivals, Titirangi Festival of Music and huge highlights in 2012, the
Melbourne Ukulele festival and WOMAD.
Mainstreet Wanganui Marketing Manager Elise Goodge says, “after the rave reviews ‘The Nukes’ received at WOMAD last year
I knew we had to have them, lucky for us Snapper has family here in Whanganui so when I phoned him he said he had been
hoping an opportunity to play in Whanganui would present itself, it was very serendipitous.”
Mainstreet are reprising some of the most popular aspects of this year’s Caboodle next year including an outdoor movie
screening in the evening and the Ridgway Street stage, they will also be acting on feedback gathered from the community
and retailers and will be closing down some additional areas of the CBD to traffic and including a ‘kids zone’ for
families.
With visiting out of town acts such as ‘The Nukes’ and some of our best local talent on show Whanganui will once again
be the place to be next Wellington Anniversary Weekend.
