JACQUI TE KANI CNZM

E Jacqui, e te wahine toa, e te rangatira māhorahora, e te whaea, haere, haere, haere i te waka whakarei o mate. Ahakoa, ko koe tēnei kua nunumi ki te pō, kua tīkina mai e te ao o tua; ko ō mahi ka kanohikitea tonutia, ka mātua hau tonu tō rongo, ka iere te rere o to wairua ki roto i tō ao Māori ki roto hoki i tō ao whānui.

Tēnei mātou o Te Māngai Pāho ka poroaki i a koe; koutou ngā mate tāruru nui o te ao Māori. Nā reira, e te taonga o te mate, e te rangatira kuia te tangi kau nei taku mapu.

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing last evening of our immediate past Chair, Jacqui Te Kani CNZM.

Jacqui was a member of the Board of Te Māngai Pāho from 2002 to 2010 and Board Chair from 2005 to 2010. Te Māngai Pāho CEO John Bishara notes that her steady hand was at the tiller of the organisation during a vital period in the development of Māori broadcasting; including the crucial formative years of Māori Television, the launch of the second channel, Te Reo and the advent of new media technology. Jacqui’s interest in broadcasting in te reo Māori and broadcasting also saw her as a member of Te Pūtahi Paoho and Te Huarahi Tika Trust.

Jacqui has lived a life of service to Māori, she was a past President of the Māori Women’s Welfare League, Te Roopu Wahine Māori Toko i te Ora (1999-2002), and until her passing was General Manager of the League.
At 3.00 pm today Jacqui shall be taken to the Māori Women’s Welfare League Offices at 24 Burnell Avenue, Thorndon. At 6.00am tomorrow morning Jacqui shall depart for Mangatu Marae outside Gisborne where she shall lie until the funeral service and burial on Saturday morning.

All of Māoridom will mourn this loss, but at this time our deepest sympathy is with her whānau, particularly her children and mokopuna. Nō reira e te whaea haere, haere, haere oti atu.
