Kayla Sharland to Live Below the Poverty Line for Youth Charity
Auckland, New Zealand, 11 September 2012 – One of New Zealand’s three-time-Olympians is trading her Olympic glamour for
a small taste of poverty this September.
Captain of the Black Sticks Women, Kayla Sharland, has signed up to Live Below the Line for P3 Foundation, from 24-28
September.
This means living off $2.25 of food and drink, per day, for five days.
This is the daily reality for over 1.4billion people around the world who live below the International Poverty Line.
“I think this is important, just to understand what they go through every day, especially when you’re trying to survive
on $2.25 a day. We probably take it a little bit for granted,” said Kayla.
However this is not the only motivation for Kayla to complete the challenge. All money raised through P3 Foundation is
doubled by the Glenn Family Foundation, founded by Owen Glenn, who have also provided substantial funding to Hockey New
Zealand.
“Obviously with Owen coming onboard, it [hockey] has really improved and it’s really taken off…So helping out and
supporting his [family] Foundation is something I’m really interested in doing.”
Live Below the Line was introduced in 2011 by Global Poverty Project and now involves eight partner organisations, one
being youth-for-youth volunteer organisation, P3 Foundation.
“It’s cool to see youth taking on the challenge” said Kayla, when explaining why she chose to complete the challenge
through P3 Foundation.
Kayla said she wants to encourage people around New Zealand to donate to P3 Foundation, through taking part in the Live
Below the Line Challenge.
From a sports point-of-view, Kayla emphasised the importance of eating smart during the challenge.
“Add up all your money and buy in bulk, it’s much cheaper to buy. I think the easiest will be to keep up the
carbohydrates side of things, to keep up your energy levels.”
P3 Foundation has already raised $14,125 with a goal of $50,000 to be doubled to $100,000 with the help of the Glenn
Family Foundation.
All money raised through P3 Foundation goes towards improving the education, sanitation, water, and healthcare, in order
to create a sustainable village for the people of Kalimpong, India.
