Unitec 'double bill' season promises comedy and drama aplenty
In their first public performances, Unitec's second year actors have been divided into two companies, each performing a different play making a double bill of comedy and drama.
In The Wedding by Anton Chekhov, a family seeking to enhance their reputation, pay a senior official to attend their daughter's wedding, thereby lending status to the occasion. When this individual is proven to be less than plausible, a comedy of accusations and punctured agendas ensues. This is one of Chekhov's famous short plays, wherein he affectionately, but with characteristic wit and incision, exposes superficial bourgeois aspirations. Directed by Elena Stejko.
In Skellig, a working class family is straining to cope with a sick baby, a rotting house, and an uncertain future. When fifteen-year-old Michael stumbles upon an ancient creature living in the collapsing garage, questions large as life must be faced. This stage adaptation of David Almond's novel marks a rite of passage for the protagonist and is a radiant beam upon the cobble stones of struggle street. Directed by John Davies.
