Hot Club Sandwich Will Be Hot at Luxury Jazz Weekend
Jazz is returning to the prestigious Bay Of Many Coves in the Marlborough Sounds next month following a capacity audience at their recent luxury jazz weekend from August 24-26.
Bay Of Many Coves, the only 5-star resort in the Marlborough Sounds, has engaged Wellington jazz icons, Hot Club Sandwich, and international soloist and recording artist, Fiona Pears, to perform at the resort from October 12-14.
Hot Club Sandwich play a broad repertoire of jazz but specialise in weaving their own popular compositions that explore topical themes such as dishonest politicians, couch potato rugby fans, café culture and TV evangelists into their programme.
Bay Of Many Coves’ co-owner, Murray McCaw, has described them as the pre-eminent jazz trio in Wellington for their three Ps - playing, personality and performance.
Fiona Pears played classical violin with orchestras in New Zealand in her pre-teens but her musical journey saw her discover jazz from an early age. She’s now based in London and has appeared as soloist with the Royal Liverpool and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestras. Fiona has written music for, arranged and performed with Hayley Westenra, Libera, Aled Jones and Lee Mead.
However Fiona is just as versatile as playing with a hot jazz trio as with a full symphony orchestra.
Hot Club Sandwich and Fiona will play performance and background jazz throughout the weekend. They’ll greet guests on their arrival and be the perfect musical maestros as guests explore the venue and take part in the abundance of optional activities from cruising, to dolphin watching to winery tours to enjoying the resort’s distinctive eco-system.
A unique feature of the weekend is the special Winemakers’ Master Class. Bay Of Many Coves’ presents its weekend of jazz in association with Villa Maria Vineyard and a superb highlight will be the master class conducted by senior winemaker and raconteur, Jeremy McKenzie, on how to blend your own Sauvignon Blanc.
The fun event will see groups of six or so people creating their own blend by using Villa Maria’s measuring cylinders, calculators, pencils and Kiwi know how to make their taste sensation as authentic as possible.
The blends will then be tasted blind by all participants and the winning team members will receive a bottle of Villa Reserve Sauvignon. Villa Maria wines will also be served with Bay of Many Coves’ memorable degustation meal hosted by Executive Chef, Hannes Bareiter, on the Saturday night.
Murray McCaw was delighted with the response from guests to the recent jazz weekend which he says clearly meets a need for people wishing to enjoy stunning music in a stunning setting.
“Hot Club Sandwich with soloist Fiona Pears will make for a magic three days in the Sounds. Their versatility is renowned and they’ll present everything from performance cameos to background ambiance,” Murray says.
Prices for the October 12-14 Luxury Jazz Weekend start from $965 per person.
