‘Remember to focus on the things you can have, not on those you can’t. Love food again.’
The Family-friendly Gluten-free Cookbook is the culmination of one family’s fight to eat well, after being diagnosed with varying degrees of gluten-intolerance. Author Sarah King proves it is possible for a family to follow a gluten-free diet, however challenging the circumstances and on a limited budget.
At 35, first-time author Sarah King hasn’t taken life at a steady pace. Her successes range from working as a nanny for Pink Floyd’s Rick Wright in London, becoming a wedding planner (including a stint on Good Morning TV) to running her own catering company in her early 20’s – yet her life at home was not the same story. At 24 she found herself divorced with two kids. 18 months later, her new partner had been sent to prison for embezzling funds from their gourmet food delivery company and while Sarah’s name was cleared of any part in the fraudulent saga, she found herself bankrupt.
What ensued for Sarah were some years of hard graft, working 60-hour-weeks to pay back the debtors. With the children and her new partner Mitch, the family baked all day for the Takapuna markets, sleeping for a few hours in the back of the van so they could bag a primo spot at the market the next morning. The weekly feedback from customers meant each new week’s offering was an improvement on the last and even tastier than before. Quite soon both gluten-free and gluten tolerant market goers were devotees to Sarah’s baking. This was the testing ground for the recipes in The Family-friendly Gluten-free Cookbook.
Sarah King has mastered the art of cooking classic recipes gluten-free, meaning her four hungry and gluten-intolerant children and partner no longer notice that they are eating gluten-free! Having practised on her market customers, her catering company’s corporate clients and family, Sarah is now able to share her well-loved recipes with gluten-free foodies in her new book.
Sarah’s years of tried-and-tested delicious recipes in The Family-friendly Gluten-free Cookbook means you and your family can now eat the classics – and enjoy meals again.

- Bacon and Corn Muffins
- Garlic Bread
- Homestyle Chicken Pie

§ Over 24 million people worldwide are affected by coeliac disease. Under-diagnosis is a significant problem, with only 1 in 8 people being diagnosed.
§ Children in particular can suffer serious health consequences from coeliac disease unless they are introduced to a good gluten-free diet. Coeliac disease has a tendency to run in families. If one family member suffers from the condition then there is a 10-15% chance that an immediate family member will also have the condition.
§ Families find it hardest to adopt a gluten-free diet, as children demand food ‘that is the same as everyone else eats’. This book provides recipes with all the recognisable family favourites.
The Family-friendly Gluten-free Cookbook by Sarah King, RRP $39.99, published Friday 7th September. Sarah lives on Auckland’s North Shore.
