Central City Art Scene Set to Buzz as
Artweek in Auckland’s Big Little City Arrives in
October
BIG little City is
gearing up to spread its artistic wings far and wide as the
home of ARTWEEK 2012, this October and November.
Auckland’s thriving visual art scene is set to come
alive across the ten-day event (running from 26th October -
4th November 2012) as galleries, corporate and public spaces
provide an exciting opportunity for people to engage with
forward-thinking and creative talent in and around the
central city.
Alex Swney, CEO of Heart of the City
says, “Supporting the arts is a key pillar for Heart of
the City and we are thrilled to be involved. Already in its
third year, Art Week presented by the NZ Contemporary Art
Trust in Auckland’s BIG little City promises to be bigger
and better than ever before. ARTWEEK 2012 encourages people
to explore all that is on offer in their city via gallery
exhibitions, performances, discussions, tours and
installations.”
For the first time ever, three
commissioned street art murals will be unveiled at various
central city locations in celebration of the diverse and
inspiring up-and-coming art scene in the BIG little City. Be
sure not to miss these incredible murals located at the
corner of Rutland and Lorne Street, the Mid- City, Elliott
Street steps, and another city centre location soon to be
announced.
“From street art to hidden corporate art
collections and everything in between, ARTWEEK 2012 will
certainly appeal to both the culturally cultivated and the
inquisitive with the wide variety of events and activities
on offer,” adds Swney.
Another welcomed addition to
this year’s calendar is the BIG little City’s free Walks
of Art, a series of guided evening week-day tours and
weekend day-time tours. These tours offer insight on both
the renowned and undiscovered artworks located in various
art pockets and spaces found within the city with trails
around the Waterfront area, Britomart and Queen Street. The
knowledgeable team from Auckland Walks will help navigate
the myriad of art on offer. You can peruse at your leisure
with the Art in Auckland app available at the Apple App
store or from Google Play, or the BIG little City Art Week
Walks and Activities guide (in the daily paper on 17th
October) and check out some of Auckland’s best galleries,
sculpture, public and street art.
Other features
include events focussing on the Art of Dining, Art of
Writing and the Art of Fashion where industry experts
deliver fresh ideas through discussions on integrating art
into everyday life at art hubs in and around town.
The complete BIG little City ARTWEEK 2012 programme will
be released early October. For further information on all
the central city events, head to biglittlecity.co.nz or
