OPC father-and-son adventure weekend announced

Kiwi dads and their sons are being challenged to a weekend of outdoor bonding adventures at the Sir Edmund Hillary
Outdoor Pursuits Centre of New Zealand at Tongariro.
The OPC Father and Son Adventure Weekend, on October 13 and 14, is dedicated to giving fathers and sons the opportunity
to team up for a challenge and an adrenalin rush – and some essential quality time.
The programme has been endorsed by Ian Grant, parenting guru, bestselling author of Fathers Who Dare Win and Growing
Great Boys, and a father of three and grandfather of nine.
“This is an amazing weekend that no father and son team should miss,” he says.
“Dads, your son longs to hear you say, ‘You’ve got what it takes, mate!’ The OPC weekend has got just the right formula
and environment to make you say that to your son.
“Believe me, your son will talk about this experience in the years to come. This could be his initiation experience into
manhood.”
The weekend’s activities could include kayaking, tramping, caving, rock climbing, abseiling, high ropes, orienteering
and canoeing. The actual mix will depend on the weather and the group’s abilities and preferences, and all activities
will be supervised by highly trained professional instructors.
“Father figures” are also welcome on the weekend; there is no requirement that the fathers and sons are blood relatives.
Participants don’t need to be actively involved in sports or the outdoors, but it does help if they have a moderate
level of fitness, a positive attitude and a willingness to give it a go.
The weekend will cost $740 for two, and $340 each for any extra sons. We recommend that sons are aged over eight, but
there is no maximum age. Grandfathers are welcome!
The price includes two nights’ accommodation; all meals from arrival night dinner, through to departure day lunch; two
days of instruction; use of specialist gear and equipment; transport to and from activities once at the centre; and any
gear you may wish to borrow from OPC (such as fleeces, boots and jackets). Participants will need to bring some
essential gear.
OPC Tongariro is located between National Park Village and Turangi township on the northwestern boundary of the
Tongariro National Park.
