UCOL Motorsport team rev up for racing
UCOL Driver Trainer Dave Jenkins will swap a 10 tonne truck for a sporty Toyota Starlet this Sunday and he’ll have UCOL Motorsport students to support him every rev of the way.
In a complete departure from his usual job of teaching UCOL’s Truck Driving programme, Dave will be racing one of the UCOL team’s Starlets with UCOL Motorsport students, and their senior lecturer Lance Funnell, acting as his pit crew.
Dave will compete in the RS Cup in the last round of the Manawatu Car Club’s Winter Series.
The 1300cc Starlet he is driving is one of four that were built by Motorsport students.
Each year, teams of four students build a car to develop their skills in automotive, electrical and engineering, motor body trades and vehicle refinishing.
The zippy little white cars have been driven regularly in the Winter Series and Lance says, “Racing the cars on the track has been a great promotional tool for the Motorsport programme.”
The day’s racing is being held in conjunction with the inaugural TR Group Transport Expo / Truck Show & Shine event to be held at Manfeild Park.
UCOL will have a stand at the Expo to promote the Motorsport and Truck Driving programmes that are taught at their Manfeild base. “We’ll also have our impressive black Formula Ford, that we use for Motorsport training, on display,” says Lance.
The entry fee allows visitors to see the Transport Expo, the Truck Show & Shine, a display of some of the finest Holden vehicles in the country and of course, Dave and the UCOL team taking out the RS Cup.
When: Sunday 2 September from 10.00am-3.30pm
Where: Manfeild Park, Feilding
Entry Fee: $10 per adult, under 17 years free
